Newcastle Federal Courts
Newcastle Federal Courts
The Federal Courts of Australia (FCA) underwent a refurbishment and extension to its premises located in Bolton Street, Newcastle, New South Wales. The project supported the expansion of the current Family Court of Newcastle footprint through to the adjacent building on level one, adding approximately 1000m2 of floor space. This development has allowed space for two new family courtrooms, two new executive offices and an associated legal fraternity.
With complete client confidence and appreciation of the quality design and skills, GHD and GHDWoodhead were able to successfully deliver an integrated offering of Architecture, Interior Design, Structural and Building Services to achieve a distinctive design for FCA.
The interior space was designed with consideration of the visitor’s situation. The path from entry is a journey; soft wave-like sculptural screens provide separation for waiting, as well as an artistic distraction. A similar approach was taken with the courtrooms, with a thoughtful selection of finishes and curvature details evoking a soft, calming impression.
The bespoke acoustic ceilings mimic the wall panel curvature adding to the softening of the spaces.
The courtroom also features timber veneered wall panels with curved details, concentrating the focus forward in the long narrow spaces.
