The Juanita Nielsen Community Centre is housed in a heritage listed former warehouse building in the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo, in the City of Sydney. The Centre provides a range of activities and functions for a highly varied demographic. Vibrancy and safety are at the core of this project. To this end, the design re-orientates the entry, re-organises the circulation, and maximises visibility internally. The 1888 heritage fabric is retained, up-cycled and celebrated. A new pocket park in the adjoining lane will allow activities such as the After Hours School Care facility to extend outside, activating the street, and will be open to the local community during daylight hours when not in use by the Centre.
Shortlisted in the 2017 Heritage, Public, and Interior AIA NSW Chapter Architecture Awards.
