Aria Restraurant Brisbane

02 February 10

Tzannes Associates, who were responsible for the interior design of Aria Restaurant Sydney, designed the refurbishment of the old Pier Nine Restaurant site creating an intimate dining room of warmth and elegance again with the Andreu World Lucrecia chair. While the design is sophisticated, it maintains a relaxed and inviting atmosphere for guests.

CHIQUITA

27 January 10

Using locally sourced natural fibers and organic materials as well as innovative hand-made production techniques, Kenneth Cobonpue has put a new face on modern design. The Chiquita stool is a perfect example of Kenneth Cobonpue’s unique and eco-friendly design style. The Chiquita stool is made with natural rattan poles (rattan is a fast growing palm species and a rapidly renewable resource) that sit atop a polyurethane cushion fitted inside a moulded steel base. Although sitting on top of poles may not sound very comfortable, trust us when we say it is. When you sit, the rattan poles sink softly into the cushion below making a seat that follows the contours of your backside.

ANDREU WORLD WINS IP CASE

30 November 09

Valencia, November 30, 2009

The Zarina collection: protection enforced

In response to a complaint filed through our Intellectual Property Representatives Clarke Modet, we have now received confirmation that Sandler Seating, an official distributor of Italian manufacturer Beltramini, will stop commercializing their Star collection and withdraw it from both their catalogue and website.

This decision concludes the process that Andreu World initiated conjointly against Beltramini, as the manufacturer, and Sandler, as the dealer operating mainly in the United Kingdom and the United States. Andreu World took action when it became clear that the manufacture, marketing and promotion of the Star collection clearly imitated the design of the chairs, armchairs and stools included in the Zarina collection created by William Sawaya.

These actions mark the success of our campaign to protect our designs worldwide. Andreu World is committed to defending all original creations and preserving the quality, originality and added value of each and every one of our designs. This is why all Andreu World collections are protected by Industrial Design and Copyright worldwide. New actions like the one described will be taken against unethical companies which do not respect the original designs created by Andreu World.

Please, do not hesitate to communicate the management of Andreu World any duplications of our designs that you find in your territories.

DAYLIGHT | SLED BASE MESH STACK CHAIR

02 September 09

The revolutionary Tecs Daylight chair sets new aesthetic and ecological standards for premium high density, multi-purpose stacking chairs. The mesh seat and back conforms to the body, prevents pressure points from forming and provides a cool, comfortable sit. A combination of torsion bar frame and flexible resin back allows the Daylight sled base mesh stack chair to move with the user. The chair also features integral linking glides fitted to the sled base.

The polypropylene seat and back surround is available in three colors, black, grey and white. The seat mesh is available in black, light grey and white. The steel frame is available in a durable silver powder coat finish or a chrome option is also available. Using a unique patented manufacturing processes, Daylight’s resin frame and mesh are fabricated as one. This “trim injection method” bonding the frame of the seat and backrest with the mesh is designed to protect the mesh panels from abrasion when stacking.

For a stacking mesh chair, Daylight’s ergonomic credentials are impressive. The Daylight chair weighs only 3.8kg ensuring easy stacking and transport on its dolly and features flexible mesh [super-strong, fire retardant polyester thread manufactured from the same material as car seat belts in the Daylight TECS grey model]. Furthermore, a combination of the torsion bar frame and flexible resin back allows this stack chair to move with the user – recognized as a prerequisite in ergonomic seating. Daylight’s organic curved form alleviates pressure on the thighs.

Stackable up to 45 units high (on its dolly) in just 2 meters, Daylight’s functional strengths place it in the top echelon of multi-purpose seating. Featuring ‘stacking stoppers’ which prevent friction damage, Daylight is ideal for high traffic training, meeting and conference areas. Today’s environments demand flexibility. That’s why Daylight is amazingly lightweight. Simple to reconfigure. Simple to stack. Weighing just 3.8 kgs, it’s a chair to take anywhere.

Daylight’s design is completely ecologically friendly and are constructed from recycled and recyclable material. All components of the standard Daylight chair are recyclable. The resin parts on the black and grey chairs are formed from 5-6 recycled car batteries initially enabling Daylight TECS chairs to be marketed with the Japanese Environmental Association Eco Mark. Daylight TECS chairs comply with the Japanese Ministry of the Environment’s Law Concerning the Promotion of Procurement of Eco-Friendly Goods and Services (Law on Promoting Green Purchasing). ‘Daylight’ received a gold Best of Neo-Con award at the largest North American world trade fair of furniture. The Daylight chair has also been submitted for GECA certification. Completed GBCA chair matrix can be provided at this time.

A mesh seat and back is unequalled for comfort. The mesh responds to your needs and conforms to the shape of your body – not to a hypothetical average physique. Each Daylight mesh stack chair becomes your Daylight chair – responsive to your shape and your size. When you experience Daylight you experience the ultimate in stack chair comfort as Daylight eliminates uncomfortable pressure points. Daylights open weave revives you with continuous ventilation. For cooler seating that looks cool, too.

Daylight weaves an exquisite mesh material around a clean, contemporary design. It blends seamlessly into various settings. Whether used as a solitary guest chair for a workstation or grouped en masse in an auditorium, Daylight’s quiet “presence” adds an air of elegance to any environment. Not many versatile and functional products fit the “designer furniture” category, but the Daylight mesh stack chair ticks the boxes for designer furniture, an environmentally friendly solution and a very functional and practical selection for many individual or mass seating requirements.

Daylight mesh chairs in an office environment literally let more daylight through to the building core.  Available nationally, Daylight stack chairs are becoming the mesh stack chair of choice for many of Australia’s leading design firms and corporate end users.

AUTHENTIC DESIGN ALLIANCE

15 July 09

KE-ZU is a founding member of the Authentic Design Alliance [ADA] – supporting original design. ADA was launched at the State of Design festival in Melbourne. Other founding members of ADA include Corporate Culture, Euroluce, Living Edge and Stylecraft.

The ADA believes that:

* both our design heritage and our creative design future rest upon the support of designers’ original work;

* original design is an investment;

* originals are manufactured by licensed factories producing high quality work supported by warranties;

* support of authentic design is an ethical, practical and aesthetic decision which shows respect to the designer;

* the innovative design leap grows from inspired creativity through entrepreneurial financial investment, research and development, production and marketing processes. This investment cycle needs protection from copies as not all products become financially successful bestsellers or classics.

The Alliance supports design talent and the moral rights of the designer to royalties from the sale of original work. It believes that without protection of original design, investment will dry up.

An extensive media campaign has been launched to educate the market about original design.

Visit www.authenticdesign.com.au for further information, news, links or membership inquiries.

Pierre Paulin 1927-2009

14 June 09

With much regret we learned that Pierre Paulin has passed away at the age of 81 years in Montpellier (France).

Pierre Paulin was of significant importance for the design furniture industry in general and especially for Artifort. In the year 2007 we celebrated his 60-60-80 jubilee, 50 years as a designer for Artifort, 60 years working as a designer in general, and his 80th birthday.

Pierre Paulin experimented with fabrics and materials, but the seating comfort was his highest goal. Together with Kho Liang Ie and Geoffrey Harcourt it was the start of a period with new design methods. His legacy is gigantic. On one hand through a large collection of classic designs - of which quite a lot of products still are in the current Artifort collection, and on the other hand through his philosophy, which makes him a great example for many designers.

During an international furniture show in 1958, styled by Kho Liang Ie, Paulin impressed with a contemporary chair. Since this show he is a free lance designer for Artifort. It is the start of a long and fruitful co-operation. Because of the striking sculptural forms, his designs do distinguish themselves. Pierre Paulin has received worldwide awards.

His designs are timeless and up to today modern and progressive. No form because of the form, but applied design. His famous designs for Artifort are the Ribbon chair (1966), but also the Orange Slice, Tongue, Little Tulip and Mushroom belong to the Classics designs. These and a lot other Paulin designs are still part of the Artifort collection. The work of Pierre Paulin is also shown in museums all over the world, ie the MoMa in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He also designed the interiors of the French Presidents Pompidou and Mitterand in the Elysée in Paris.

He lived his last years in his house in the French Cevennes.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO CHURCH PEWS

01 May 09

Instead of traditional church pews, many church groups are choosing stacking chairs as their seat of choice, and their reasons for doing so are as unique as their churches. This is a huge change from the 1960s when most places of worship had church pews.

Luke Hughes and Company Ltd  of Covent Garden [London, UK] specializes in bespoke ecclesiastical fit-outs and has recently completed Westbourne Grove Church. More images can be viewed on their website at http://www.ecclesiasticalfurniture.co.uk/pages/framechairs.htm

The “flex appeal” trend began when churches opted to build multi-purpose structures in the 1980s. These buildings created a demand for flexible seating that could be used for Sunday services in place of restrictive church pews, and also be easily removed to turn a sanctuary into a theater, a concert or banquet hall, or even an art exhibition opening up the possibilities for creative outreach to a church's local community. With the ability of stacking chairs to easily be re-configured or rows added for days with larger attendances [ie Easter Sunday and Christmas], stacking chairs became the seat of choice from multi-purpose facilities.  ??For the parishioner with a bad back, chairs are more comfortable than church pews. However, for many parishioners a large proportion of comfortable stacking chairs on the market are too heavy for some people to stack and move. Mesh stacking Daylight chairs manufactured by AXONA-Aichi in Japan provide a real solution with a weight of only 3.8kgs per chair, integral ganging device and the ability to stack 45 high on a transport dolly. In addition, the frames on Daylight chairs are manufactured from recycled car batteries contributing to a greener earth.   ??While price and flexibility are important issues to churches, parishioners simply want a comfortable place to sit. Daylight chairs have been designed for comfort over long periods of time which is one of the many reasons they are also used in major convention facilities eg. The Phoenix Convention centre in Arizona has 28,000 Daylight mesh stacking chairs.

14 January 09

Re-Trouvé is a metal indoor or outdoor furniture collection which evoke past forms created through the use of superior technology. In the words of Patricia Urquiola "Re-Trouvé Inspiration came from the marvelous icon chairs of the '50's, so full of curls and doodles. I wanted to create new models which would bring together a re-interpretation of this old fashioned design with a more humorous twist, produced with numerical control technology".

The superior metal working technology of Emu allows for the creation of the Re-Trouvé indoor or outdoor furniture characterized by recurrent patterns of diamond motifs. The geometric design of Re-Trouvé gives three-dimensionality to the pieces. Industrial production enables high product quality for  Re-Trouvé whilst maintaining the hand crafted qualities of the furniture.

If you are considering replacing church pews, are building a new place of worship and would like an alternative to church pews or, simply need additional seating to existing church pews, Daylight mesh stacking chairs can provide a real alternative that will meet most needs. Significant stock are kept on hand to meet immediate requirements.

The best comparison is “the sit test”. Call the Australian importer KE-ZU or your nearest outlet for a sample chair to try.

Daylight mesh stacking chairs come with a factory backed 5 year warranty against manufacturing defects or faults.

29 November 08

The Halo Disc lamp from Hive and designed by Kenneth Cobonpue is the winner of the Australian House & Garden "Best of the Best" 2008 Style Award.

Nominated for this prestigious award by Hermon & Hermon, Australian House & Garden selected the Halo Disc lamp by Kenneth Cobonpue for the “Best of the Best” 2008 Style Award because “Turn this light on and it’ll create a wonderful halo. The amazing weave is visible even in shadow. Its modern organic shape and clean lines make it a brilliant focal point.”

VOYAGE BED by KENNETH COBONPUE

23 June 07

The Voyage bed is made of abaca or rattan woven on a steel frame and tied with nylon filament, creatinga cozy cocoon where dreams are revealed. Also available as outdoor version in polyethylene and steel - the ultimate outdoor day bed. The Voyage comes in three sizes: Queen, King Extra King. According to Inquirer.net, Brad Pitt sleeps on a Voyage bed. As many know, the Hollywood actor is deep into design and architecture which perhaps explains why he was drawn to Cobonpue’s designs.

Kenneth Cobonpue began studying Industrial Design at Pratt Institute in New York, 1987. While completing his degree, he apprenticed for a leather and wood workshop near Florence, Italy. In 1994, he studied Furniture Marketing and Production in Reutlingen, Germany. He returned home to the Philippines in 1996, to manage Interior Craft of The Islands Inc, a company founded in 1972 by his mother, Betty Cobonpue, a designer famous for creating new techniques in rattan. Discovering that modern design could have a new face using natural fibres and materials, he slowly created the pieces which form the heart of his collection today. Integrating locally sourced organic materials with innovative handmade production techniques offeredan alternative to the Western Definition of modern design. 'From the start, I was seeking a fresh sensibility to embrace and develop with regard to design. I didn't find it in Milan. Nor in New York. I found it closer to home in the tropical island of Cebu.' Today, Kenneth Cobonpue designs offer the perfect foil to the sleek, hard surfaces of contemporary interior spaces.

CLASSIC BUTTERFLY LOUNGE CHAIR C.1964 by PIERRE PAULIN

15 June 07

This unconventional, timeless piece was designed by Pierre Paulin in 1964. A familiar face and a design classic, it will be considered a classic for many years to come. Combining a thin rustproof metal base with a slung saddle seat to create a comfortable chair that decorated the living rooms in the sixties. The frame is brushed stainless steel with saddle seat in natural or black leather or a black/white cow hide. Another designer furniture classic from KE-ZU.

Design: The chair F 675, designed by Pierre Paulin in 1966, is one of the original designs Artifort is bringing back. A thinly rustproof metal base with a firm harness leather seat as a comfortable chair decorated the living rooms in the sixties. Now available in natural or black harness leather or a black/white cow hide. Designer: Pierre Paulin, born in 1927 in Paris, belonged to the happy generation in the Artifort furniture design tradition. Pierre Paulin, born in Paris in 1927, belonged to the happy generation of pioneers of the fiftees. The design of products was still an unexploited area. A world of challenges, but also of dangers. Certainly, in his native country France, where at that time fairly no education or industry was interested in design, Pierre Paulin could not develop himself. So, in 1958 he became a member of the Artifort design Group and there he got the chance where Paris apparently was not ready for. The realisation of his sculptural vision on seating furniture. Pierre Paulin introduced a new construction method (a foam injected tubular steel frame) and upholstered technique (elastic covers), which made possible truly innovative, sculpturally designed furniture forms. Experimental his ideas became slowly reality. Ideas which he personally especially saw as beautiful things for general people but these things where picked up soon by the avantgarde public and they unchained a truly revolution. From that moment the enfant terrible Pierre Paulin and his coloured seating sculptures were adored by the lovers of furniture in metropolises like New York, Paris and Tokyo.

100% Recyclable Polyethylene can be recycled into many useful, durable products such as refuse containers, building materials, and office accessories. Non Toxic and Clean Burning When burned properly, polyethylene (made from carbon and hydrogen), turns to carbon dioxide and water. There are no toxic fumes given off and the residual ash (only .25 % remains) is not toxic. Additionally, polyethylene has a higher BTU content (17,800 BTU's/lb.) than coal and paper, producing more energy when burned. Safe In Landfills Studies show that even readily degradable items are not degrading in landfills. On the positive side, polyethylene products are a stable ingredient in landfills. They are not toxic and do not give off leachate or methane gas . Alternative to PVC According to a recent study commissioned by the San Francisco Office of the Environment, high density polyethylene is a preferred plastic alternative to PVC because it releases far less persistent toxic pollution over the material's life-cycle from production, through use, and ultimately disposal. The report also determined that high density polyethylene is much easier to recycle than PVC. Future Application Although the raw material for polyethylene comes from coal, a non-renewable resource, polyethylene is environmentally friendly since polyethylene products are durable and recyclable. The development of polyethylene has often been credited with initiating the modern plastics industry. Many newer plastics such as polypropylene, polystyrene, and Teflon, are variations of polyethylene. However, the reliability, relative cheapness, and versatility of polyethylene ensure its continued use in the future. Polyethylene - Safe in the Food Industry Polyethylene is also widely used throughout the food packaging industry for its purity and non-toxic properties. It has a very simple molecular structure that does not require chemical additives (such as vinyl a.k.a. PVC or polyvinylchloride). Its use is recommended by environmental groups all over the world. Greenpeace Recommended Alternatives Greenpeace recommends Polyethylene as an acceptable plastic alternative in various industries including: · Pipes - Concrete, steel, galvanized iron, copper, clay, chlorine-free plastics, including high-density polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyisobutylene. · Flooring - Linoleum, wood, stone, rubber, PE and PP. · Cable coatings - PE, ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer (EVA); polyamide, silicone, and other thermoplastic elastomers. · Packaging - No packaging at all, glass, paper and cardboard, PP, PE, and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Office supplies - Metal, wood, PP, PE. · Medical uses - Glass, latex, chlorine-free plastics including PP, PE, PET, EVA, polybutylene terepthalate, block copolymers, and silicones

Jean Louis Iratzoki, France Interior Architect, born in San Juan de Luz, the French Basque Country, in 1965.This young Basque got a diploma in interior architecture in 1988 at the Boulle school of Paris, and studied Industrial Design in the Escuela Experimental of Madrid. He worked in Parisian agencies for several years, acquiring a deep knowledge of plastic materials. In 1998 he opened his own design workshop in San Juan de Luz. He created different objects, such as a toothbrush, a range of children´s chairs for Carrefour, a bottle of water and a perfume bottle. He now mainly works in furniture design; he creates collections for companies such as BIOK, PISON and SOKOA. SOKOA'S ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT In coherence with the company's values, Sokoa started a study at the end of 2003 in order to eliminate most of the VOC emanations, and also joined the " Global Compact " project in February 2005. To keep in line with these principles, SOKOA commits itself to put, progressively and resolutely, a continuous improvement plan into practice for its environmental results, at both internal and external levels, and to prevent potential risks that could occur as a consequence of an accident. Within this context, SOKOA commits itself to match legal requirements and other requirements applicable to the factory that are linked to environmental impacts. SOKOA's aim is to obtain the ISO 14001 certification for the plant located in Hendaye, where more than three quarters of the sedentary staff work. The staff has already been made aware of this project, and more specific and better adapted training and information meetings will take place later on. It has been stated that workers generally share these aims and agree with the project; first, all the workers are shareholders and hold a part of SOKOA's capital. In addition they feel really concerned about the improvement of working conditions and the sustainable development of human activities, particularly at an economic level. SOKOA has already acted on the main recurrent pollution source (at both internal and external levels) that are the VOC emanations (this plan was carried out from May 2005 to March 2006), and as a consequence they should decrease by more than 80% from the second half-year of 2006 when compared to last year's results.

The Atrium Bar has been designed to create a sophisticated, magical place for guests and something out of the ordinary. Zarina by William Sawaya Prior to designing Zarina, William Sawaya studied Andreu World to understand its philosophy. AERO is a revolutionary aluminum or aluminium bench for indoor or outdoor public spaces. With or without armrests, with or without back, wall mount or floor models and with optional side tables. Manufactured with extruded aluminium profiles and legs in stainless steel. An upholstered version with removable cushions is also available. Winner of the DELTA DE ORO, the most important Spanish design award and at NEOCON in Chicago, the Gold award for seating and the Best of Neocon award. The Aero Bench offers a clean alternative to public seating with its refined extruded aluminum construction. Options and additional features expand the use from outdoors to high traffic public areas. AERO…designed for strength. If you look at the extensive span o a seven seater (4350mm) it is quite astonishing that this unit has only two legs, but two is all that is needed. The structural integrity of these benches are part of the design of the three aluminum extrusions. The webbed internal structure of each hollow extrusion produces great rigidity. Each piece interlocks to the next forming one stable unit. The Aero Bench is offered in three models — all aluminum, polyurethane back and seat, and upholstered insert. AERO…environmentally friendly indoors and outThe all aluminum models may be used indoors but are also very appropriate for outdoor settings on the corporate campus, as well as, open public atriums. All benches may be secured to the floor with a special device. The aluminum surface has a ribbed texture that provides a non-slip surface and additional durability. A natural color anodized chemical finish is applied to harden and protect the aluminum. This finish does not rub off and is easy to clean. Aluminum is recyclable, and anodizing is an environmentally friendly process, which utilizes water-based chemicals. The main liquid and solid by-products are easily isolated, and either recycled into the process or used as raw materials in other processes. Aero offers an environmental statement in aesthetic design. Designed by Lievore Altherr Molina, this design studio focuses on product design, consultancy and art direction work for a number of companies, offering personalized solutions to industry. Known by its furniture design, it also develops interior design projects, packaging and product design. MILAN FURNITURE FAIR | RE-ISSUE CLASSIC MUSHROOM OTTOMAN

25 April 07

First there was the Mushroom – one of Paulin’s best known designs. A design that is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art [MOMA] in New York. After that came the Mushroom pouffe [pouf, ottoman or footstool] – an equally celebrated design that featured in all the magazines. On the occasion of the 2007 Milan Furniture Fair, Artifort presented the re-issue of the classic Mushroom pouffe which has now re-entered production

In the nineteen-fifties, Pierre Paulin, born in France, was invited by Kho Liang Ie to present his prototypes at an international furniture show. This planted the seeds for a working relationship that was to bear very special fruit over the next 50 years – half a century. Who does not know such modern classics as Ribbon, Orange Slice, Tongue, Butterfly and Mushroom? Again and again, the worldwide prize-winning designs of Paulin appear as true works of art. They are challenging. They inspire. But, above all, they are pieces of furniture that you can sit in. They are not form for the sake of form but applied design. In optima forma. Pierre Paulin, born in 1927: a French designer with a complex personality. A certain self-consciousness and an elegant, whimsical style may have accounted for the fact that he has remained virtually unknown to the general public. He is, however, the designer of seating sculptures that have continually been in production for some fifty years and sold all over the world by Artifort. At the suggestion of Kho Liang Ie, an international furniture exposition was set up on November 3rd, 1958 in Artifort’s newly designed showroom in Maastricht. A host of designers, including Alain Richard, André Monpoix and Pierre Paulin, exhibited their prototypes here. It was Pierre Paulin who captured everyone’s special attention with the contemporary design of an easy chair with a shell seat (the Oyster). Besides Paulin’s unconventional ideas about new furniture shapes and the personal impression he made on Harry Wagemans, this design was one of the reasons Artifort was keen to establish a connection with him as a freelance designer in 1959. This was the start of a relationship that was to last far into the seventies. The image of Artifort has been determined since then by Pierre Paulin together with the British designer Geoffrey Harcourt and Kho Liang Ie. These references make for the enormous versatility present in Paulin’s work. The first plastic garden chairs were designed by Paulin for Allibert in 1973 and are still in production today. The facade of Roche Bobois, bd St Germain has not been changed since Paulin designed it in 1961. He also designed the French president Georges Pompidou’s private apartments in the Elysées Palace. The main office of President François Mitterrand in the Elysée Palace was completely restored according to Paulin’s design as well as the Tapestry room and the City Hall in Paris. Paulin won the National Prize of Industrial Creation for a series of products for Calor (the best known of which is a travelling iron). He also designed the very first miniature electric shaver for Tefal. Many of his furniture designs have been awarded international prizes and have been included in the collections of museums all over the world. Paulin’s models are published frequently in design magazines and after 50 years are still described as contemporary and revolutionary today! Paulin left Paris a few years ago and now lives in the Cévennes region, opposite Mont Aigoual. Nevertheless, at almost 80 years of age, Pierre Paulin is still active as a designer of new products for international top labels.

MILAN FAIR | WOK by Javier Mariscal for Andreu World

WOK swivel chair by Javier Mariscal can be experienced at the Milan Fair stand of Andreu World, Hall 8, Stand A31 from 18-23 April 2007. WOK can be ordered now through KE-ZU furniture showroom in Sydney and their state distributors.

A chair is a provisional refuge, a safe haven when you’re tired, or perhaps when people are looking at you. That’s why they’re so important and perhaps why there are more chairs than people. The Wok easychair came from the idea of a nut, a coconut, of a comfortable inner space protected by a solid outside shell, which when properly cut with a deft stroke, presents the secret it was hiding: its rich texture, solemn colouring and ergonomic shape. For sitting and waiting, reading, conversing, or even thinking about why there are so many chairs and they’re all so different. Presented in the entire series of finishes in the Andreu World catalogue. Javier Mariscal has lived and worked in Barcelona since 1971. Sometimes he thinks he'd like to move somewhere else, but despite this feeling he continues to paint and to draw the city: His creative energy and output bare testament to how much he's been, and still is, inspired by it. He's driven by his firm belief in communication between human beings, multi-diversity, a better world and drinkable water. He draws comics like a graphic designer; makes posters like an illustrator; designs furniture like a sculptor; does animation like a painter and paints like an architect. Andreu World since its establishment over 45 years ago in Valencia Spain, has developed into a company capable of responding to the high standards and quality levels required to supply a rigorous international market for both the residential and contract market. The success of the company owes much to applying technological advances to their traditional chair making skills to achieve a quality product that respects and reinterprets the shapes and ideas of yesterday with original designs. There are over 60 collections available, inclusive of a comprehensive range of armchairs, dining chairs, sofa chairs, bar stools and tables.

MILAN FAIR | Artifort - Pierre Paulin Jubilee

12 April 07

Salone Internazionale del Mobile - Milan Furniture Fair 18-23 April 2007. Artifort Pav. 12, booth F26.This is a very special year for Artifort . Pierre Paulin, who continues to help define the Artifort style will be 80 years old. This French designer has been active for 60 years, and has designed for Artifort for 50 of them. This is a unique event that will be celebrates in style. On the occasion of this jubilee the ABCD-sofa and Le Chat will be reproduced in 2007 and introducedat Milan.

The designs of Pierre Paulin upholstered in stretch fabric of Jack Lenor Larsen were very characteristic. Le Chat and the ABCD sofa will be re-introduced together with the fabric Momentum of Jack Lenor Larsen. An unique come back. To mark this special year, all of Paulin’s designs for Artifort are available in the fabric Momentum. This fabric was designed in 1967 by Jack Lenor Larsen and has been returned to production this year by Artifort. This exceptional design by Larson lends an extra dimension to Paulin’s seating sculptures. At the time, they were revolutionary. Now they have become timeless. An evergreen. First there was the Mushroom –one of Paulin’s best known designs. A design that is included in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. After that came the Mushroom pouffe – an equally celebrated design that featured in all the magazines. And one that has now re-entered production. Paulin designed Le Chat in 1967. Its tense curves seem to leap from a single point. Drawn with a single stroke of the pen. Without hesitation. You can feel the power, the readiness to leap. But it also invites you to sit. It’s fully shaped to your body. Dynamic and restful. Now, in 2007, Artifort is re-introducing Le Chat, with a slight modification. In 1969, ABCD won the Monza Design Award. And rightly so. The shape of Pierre Paulin’s ABCD sofa seems to be derived from an egg-box. It’s powerful, protective and yet elegant. Its curves look like waves. Organic and soft. Relaxing. Creating space for everyone who sits on it. Supportive. Ideal for hotel lobbies and lounges. Some milestones demand action, and the special jubilee of Pierre Paulin was certainly no exception. Paulin is one of Artifort’s most talked-about designers. Not only is he 80 this year, but he has also been active as a designer for 60 years, and has designed for Artifort for 50 of them. All the more reason to devote a separate article to him here: the story is more than worthy

Comfort is the absence of awareness ………. In terms of shape the product was proposed with a sharp characterisation as a result of its functional requirements: - the seat and back were designed with the intention of welcoming the user in an exercise of balance between ergonomic, shape and constructive rationalism, with soft forms that suggest and confirm comfort. - special design consideration has been given to the impact of continuous and often undue use. - The materials and construction of the chair were specifically chosen to give maximum durability. In the event of serious damage to the pieces, their replacement will not involve an excessive cost. - A high technology design process has been used, so a considerable increase is achieved in the quality of the final product and the number of different finishes, with a more satisfactory interrelationship between all of the components, resulting in a very light product of very high quality with very reasonable prices in all kinds of installations. ORIGINAL CAFE CULTURE AT KE-ZU

08 April 07

The Barcino armchair from Indecasa (Barcelona) was designed in 1963, and is considered to be the original tubular aluminium stacking chair. In 2000, Barcino was selected by MD magazine as one of the best 200 products of the 20th century. The Barcino chair has spawned countless imitations cementing it's place in the original cafe culture. Barcino is just one of many original cafe culture products available at the KE-ZU Sydney furniture showroom or www.kezu.com.au It is available in either synthetic rattan or PVC and the frame construction is anodised aluminium. Ideal for both dining and relaxing [with a Campari soda] watching the world go by.

INDECASA – the manufacturer : Indecasa was established in 1963, and was the first company to develop the Aluminium tube stacking chair in Europe. This furniture was initially established to meet the market’s need for a lightweight, weather-resistant product for camping and residential use. Today INDECASA is one of the largest manufacturers of outdoor furniture in Europe. The name of INDECASA stands for Quality, Technology and Design. The concept behind Indecasa was to establish a wide collection of contemporary furniture designed for commercial use, with Aluminium as the base material of all its collections. The range quickly became established as a leader within this market sector, for it offered wide versatility and durability. It is now exported around the world with representation in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, South Africa, South America and the USA. JOAN CASAS I ORTINEZ – the designer Ortinez has worked with Indecasa since 1964 and still works with them today. He trained as a Graphic and Industrial Designer and is currently a lecturer at the School of Arts and Crafts at Vic. in his spare time. Ortinez exhibits regularly in Barcelona as an artist as well as working with other major companies within Spain such as Danone, Iberia and Moter Iberica “Design for me means creating products for industry, for sale, that are functional and please thousands of people and that over the years will acquire classic status becoming part of our surroundings.” Joan Casas 1994. Joan Ortinez was the designer of the CLASSICA collection in 1964. This range of furniture has now come to symbolise classic European Café furniture. This collection included the “BARCINO” chair which was selected by BCD for the catalogue “Catalan Designs for Export”. His numerous achievements and prizes include: 1971 – ADI FAD award for his ashtray “902 de agua” 1988 – Collection of objects for the Olympic Games of the “Small Countries of Europe”. 1990 – ARDI magazine chose model TEMA as part of "The 100 best Spanish designs of the 80’s” 1993 – Selection of the TEMA stool as “Clasicos receientes” at the Mogar Fair, Madrid Ortinez’s collaboration with INDECASA was for him to design a range of contemporary furniture with Aluminium as the basis material, specifically for the contract market. The pieces are to proceed from a rational and logical use with function, which will respond to present day requirements. Casas will work with the manufacturing team of Indecasa for up to 3 years before a product collection will be released to the national and international market. Experience Indecasa's aim, has always been to make quality products. It set up its own Design Department at a time when no one was even attempting to produce items that were stylish, whilst catering for the needs of as many consumers as possible. Throughout its history, Indecasa has been developing the "Know How" in the field of aluminium furniture production, in the belief that the anodised finish is the best way of showing this material to its full advantage protected from the elements. The process of anodisation employed is to 5 microns which ensures that it will not break down. Most Asian furniture is only anodised to between 1-3 microns. The factory is continually investing in expanding and being modernised with all the necessary machinery and tooling as the latest technological developments are put into practice. Indecasa has always placed a lot of energy into it's Marketing, which has enabled the company to reach more markets globally and to enlarge the market segments in which their products have been used. Design Each new product will spend up to 2 years in prototype stage before it is released to the market to ensure that it meets the rigorous requirements of all markets from the USA to Sweden, Argentina and Australia. During this time the designers and engineers determine how to make the best possible chair for its intended market. Then each product is tested by INDEMCO the European independent testing authority to ensure that it meets international standards. This is how the lines you are particularly interested in, including Lucca and Mar, were conceived and developed. Joan Casas y Ortinez is responsible for the majority of Indecasa’s innovative and dynamic designs, particularly the Classica, Lucca, Siena and Mar ranges. He is one of Spain’s and Europe’s most respected furniture designers. It is a tribute to him that so many of his chairs have been copied and produced in Asia however the quality, can only be found with Indecasa manufactured Designs. Durability Indecasa’s success is due to the durability of it’s products and the many installations around the world are testament to it’s quality. These products absolutely stand up to wear and tear and are specifically designed for contract use. The quality of the materials used and manufacturing processes employed differentiate these products from the cheap asian copies. 1. Indecasa aluminium tubing is a minimum of 2.2 mm thick. Other manufacturers who can offer cheap chairs use anything between 0.5mm and 1.8mm. 2. Other distinguishing features include there are no welded joints on Indecasa products which keeps their strength at all points. Cast aluminium joints are used in a number of the product lines to increase the chair’s strength. 3. Each chair comes with superior quality glides which have a line indicator as to when they need to be replaced. This is very important as the chairs can damage the floor or ground surface and the glides are easily replaced. 4. The woven synthetic rattan is fade resistant and wovenwithin theframe [and not over the frame of the chair]where it can bew damaged over time from hitting walls, tables or other chairs. The quality of the synthetic rattan is the best quality available on the market and is not a hard plastic which has a protective varnish painted onto it which will break down very quickly. For example: At the Sydney International Airport the Barcino chair was used everyday in the food court for 12 years until replaced in 2000.A few other installations of Indecasa furniture in Australia. Australian Defense Forces (Townsville QLD, 1500 Elena Chairs), Riverside Food Court (Brisbane, QLD,for Bovis Lend Lease), Westfield Food Court (Paramatta, NSW, Star City Casino Environment Indecasa uses recycled and recyclable materials whenever possible in their design and manufacture processes. When timber is used, it is only farmed from plantations and renewable sources. The water from the manufacturing and washing processes are also re-used by the cement factory next door to the Indecasa factory. The factory is currently working towards their ISO 14001 for Environmental Assurances.

Eina stacking chair - where COMFORT is the absence of awareness

03 April 07

Think of comfort as being the absence of awareness. This is the case with Eina, a chair that wins the "sit test" time and time again. With a wide variety of potential uses, the versatility of Eina constitutes its raison d’être. The Eina programfrom Enea was conceived to cater for schools to offices, restaurants, lecture halls and home.

The concept of Eina was to create an ergonomically correct yet very comfortable chair with great versatility in form and use. The virtues of Eina include high strength and easy adaptability, which is why it is found in a wide variety of applications such as commercial offices, hospitality, education, auditoriums, airports and health where a high continuous use requires a robust product. It is available with or without arms, on a beam, with writing tablet, as a stool, it is stackable with or without arms, choice of 6 different colours of the polypropylene seats, it can be upholstered in any fabric and the frame is also available in 6 colours. The simplicity of the design is articulated by clean fluid lines and is the result of an elaborate design process that has minimised the number of components and managed to make them interrelate perfectly. The generosity of the seat is moulded to envelope the body whilst allowing a relaxed and upright position. The frame of the chair is powder-coated steel which allows for strength and the powder-coating is warm against the skin (as opposed to the direct feel of metal). With arms, Eina allows for sufficient space and comfort to suit most body types and is also stackable. Underneath the chair there is a plastic box hiding the seat fixings to the frame and ensures that when the chairs have been stacked for any considerable period of time, there is no damage or imprint left on the upholstery as the stress has been dispersed. JOSEP LLUSCA – the designer Llusca is considered to be Spain’s foremost product designer and his contract with Enea was a very considered decision to make a statement to the market. Josep Llusca is an Industrial Designer who has been working professionally since 1972 in close collaboration with many international companies such as IBM, Alcatel, Cassina, Rosenthal, Gas Natural, Enea and others. In 1993 the Catalan Autonomous Government honoured his work with a large one-man exhibition “The matter and form of design. Josep Llusca 1983-1993” with a book published simultaneously. His numerous achievements and prizes include: · Product Design Award given by the Institute of Business Designers, USA, · Industrial Excellence Award given by the Industrial Design Society of America · International Aluminium Prize ALN - Swedish Foundation of Industrial Design · National Design Prize – Spain presented by King Juan Carlos The design brief was to design a range of contemporary furniture using metallic structures specifically for the contract market. The pieces are to proceed from a rational and logical use with function which will respond to present day requirements. Llusca worked with the manufacturing team of Enea for 3 years before product was released to the national and international market.

Sellex AERO bench - winner of DELTA DE ORO and Best of Neocon

30 March 07

AERO is a revolutionary aluminium bench for indoor or outdoor public spaces. With or without armrests, with or without back, wall mount or floor models and with optional side tables. Manufactured by Sellex (Spain) with an extruded aluminium profiles and legs in stainless steel. An upholstered version with removable cushionsi s also available.

If you look at the extensive span ofa seven seater(4350mm) it is quite astonishing that this unit has only two legs, but two is all that is needed. In many opportunities, the Studio gives seminaries and courses cooperating with several Spanish universities in forming new professionals. Outdoor sofa | Croissant by Kenneth Cobonpue

28 March 07

The Croissant range designed by Kenneth Cobonpue includes sofa, lounge armchair, occasional table and end table and is available in indoor and outdoor versions.Whether used as an indoororoutdoor sofa, Croissant doubles as a sculpture or artwork. The Croissant range designed by Kenneth Cobonpue includes sofa, lounge armchair, occasional table and end table and is availablein indoor and outdoor versions. The outdoor versions are constructed of woven polyethelene on a steel frame with cushions uholstered in all weather Sunbrella fabric. The Croissant indoor collection is a suite of pieces made of hundreds of hand woven coconut leaf cores (buri). These are individually tied with abaca rope and tied down by translucent nylon wires over a hand sculpted frameof light steel. 'My palette of materials consists of rattan, buri, kawayan and abaca. Each has their own texture, colour, smell and sound. You can bend, twist and weave them in endless ways. It is a feast of the senses to work with these.' Kenneth Cobonpue. 'From the strart, I was seeking a fresh sensibility to embrace and develop with regard to design. I didn't find it in Milan. Nor in New York. I found it closer to home in the tropical island of Cebu.' Today, Kenneth Cobonpue designs offer the perfect foil to the sleek, hard surfaces of contemporary interior spaces.

Artifort re-issue F978 swivel chair designed in 1968 by Geoffrey Harcourt

27 March 07

F978 Swivel Lounge Chair was designed by Geoffrey Harcourt in 1968 and has now been reintroduced to the Artifort collection. The comfortable shell seats designed by Geoffrey Harcourt introduced a new businesslike character that penetrated to the homes of people with a taste for style via offices and public areas. These comfortable shells on a metal base are pleasantly futuristic but, at the same time, nostalgic.

The history of Wagemans Maastricht Ltd., the manufacturer of Artifort furniture, goes back to 1890 in Maastricht. Trading under the name of Artifort since the 1920’s to reflect the qualities of the upholstered furniture - good design (art) and durability (fortis). After World War II the Artifort collection became more and more modern under the impact of new ideas, materials and techniques. In the fifties the collection included not only designs by Theo Ruth, including his design for the easily dismantled armchair Congo (1952), but also contemporary pieces of furniture by foreign designers and by the architect Gerrit Rietveld. Rietveld's designs - the only upholstered chairs in his oeuvre - were specially designed for the Dutch pavilion in the Expo '58 World Exhibition in Brussels. Artifort's own design policy got under way with the appointment of the (interior) designer Kho Liang le as aesthetic advisor. Contact was soon established with various foreign designers, including Pierre Paulin (Parios) and Geoffrey D. Harcourt (Great Brittain). The team comprising these designers and Kho Liang le was successful in making the Artifort collection an international phenomenon in the 1960s. The striking sculptural furniture by Pierre Paulin attracted publicity at home and abroad. A number of Paulin's designs received design awards in the 1960s and have been included in many museum collections, including that of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The carefully conceived functional seating systems and luxury desk armchairs by Geoffrey Harcourt are eminently suitable for interior decoration projects in offices, airports, conference centres and public areas. This international contract market became the mainstay of the company in the seventies. And in the 2000’s Artifort continues with its policy of collaboration with designers at home and abroad to give its collection a profile of its own.

'Cartesius' by Mario Bellini - Compasso d'Oro

26 March 07

CARTESIUS Dining Table'Cartesius' by Mario Bellini, was the first pieceof furniture produced by the select group of Compasso d'Oro prize winners. Forty-two years later, Andreu World together with Mario Bellini, have tried to retain the spirit of the original '1962' model in 'Cartesius'. The table exhibits the allure and lightness of the original design while incorporating a newer, more contemporary aura.

Mario Bellini is one of the undisputed stars of Italian, even European, design. Bellini was born in 1935 in the city of Milan, where he graduated with a degree in architecture at the age of 25. He started to build his career early on: his spectrum of accomplishments extends from urban and architectural design to furnishings and industrial design. Among his many design projects, he was engaged by Olivetti, BB Italia, Cassina, Brionvega and Yamaha. In addition, he was commissioned by the auto industry as a designer by both Fiat and Lancia. Artemide, Erco, and Flos, in the sector lamps and lighting, all employed the young designer, as well as Vitra, a high-profile name in office furnishings. Bellini, together with friends Gae Aulenti, Gio Ponti and several other artists, contributed greatly to the revival of international interest in Italian design. In 1987, the MOMA in New York honored Bellini with a single-artist exhibition, the only one of its kind to be dedicated to a living individual. His works still comprise part of the museum's permanent collection, some 25 years after they were first presented.

Stainless steelscrews and nuts.COLOUR202 Steel Grey or 204 Black Forge.Diseno Ahorro Energetico, S.A. (DAE) company , was established in 1984 with the objective to research manufacturing, installation and commercialisation of all types of energies. Between 1988 and 1989 DAE acquired the Polinax brand which specialised in the manufacturing of fire-places. The idea of providing fire for warmth and light lead to the development of outside and inside lights as well as street furniture. In 1991, the prestigious DELTA DE ORO had been granted by the ADIFAD to the FAROLA TRONIC designed by Antoni Riera and manufactured by DAE. This reconfirmed that DAE was heading in the right direction with the right designer's and then in 1992, with the Olympic games of Barcelona and the World Expo of Seville approaching , DAE stepped up it's production of street furniture and lighting. Important works had been made such as the ANDREA designed by Martorell, Bohigas and Mackay in the Olympic port of Barcelona. Since that time the company has continued to grow and develop important export markets in France, United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Australia.
