  • About the Product

Through an artful marriage of its structured exterior and its cocoon-like plush seat, the Pillar lounge chair is monolithic yet inviting. Its crisp form allows it to stand in pairs in the middle of a great room and its soft interior makes for a comfortable place to spread out and relax in a den or study. Brad Ascalon was immersed in a world of art and design from an early age, benefitting from the influence of his grandfather, a noted Hungarian-born sculptor and industrial designer, and his father, highly recognized for his large-scale art installations in North America. Focusing on furniture design, Ascalon received a Master's degree in Industrial Design from Pratt Institute in 2005. During that time, he held a number of design apprenticeships, including one at the studio of Karim Rashid. That same year, he was recognized by Wallpaper* Magazine as one of the "Ten Most Wanted" emerging designers. Ascalon's work has been exhibited globally and his work has been featured in such publications as Wallpaper*, Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, ArtReview, Esquire and many others. Pillar lounge chair features your choice of upholstery with optional black powder-coated swivel base with self-return mechanism. Pillar is level 1 & Greenguard certified.
  • The Brand

Orphaned at 13, John Bernhardt jumped a box-car to Oregon hoping to become a government surveyor. He returned home three years later to pursue a career as a timber cutter. After buying a sawmill he saw the opportunity to use timber to make solid oak bedroom furniture. Pretty soon folks in Chicago and New York City started buying this furniture for their homes. And so in 1889 the Bernhardt Furniture Company was born in North Carolina. Berhardt’s skill was in leveraging the area’s plentiful supply of beautiful timbers, and local woodworking skills. Never one to do things by halves, he opened his factory with 25 employees.
